Caring for your lawn may not be as difficult as you think it is. Some of us view our lawn just as a normal greenery with grass and flowers. However, to extend your appreciation for your lawn, you should see your lawn as a complex ecosystem that should be protected, loved and well maintained. This is because these are living organisms like the plants and the microorganisms that will need you to play your part for them to thrive and survive. If you deepen your appreciation for your lawn, caring for it will be something that comes naturally to you. Not everyone can afford lawn services so doing it on your own may not be easy, but with some tips, it can ease the process! Lawn care can be easy if you know what you are doing. Here are some lawn care tips you should try out!
Mowing your Lawn
The most basic step to lawn care is to mow your lawn. The grass has to be mowed every time it grows out. In Spring, you will find that you will be mowing your lawn almost every week at the highest setting because of how tall the grass can get. When the growth of the grass increases, you can choose to lower the height of the mowing blade. Ensure that the rest of the grass clippings do not cover your lawn too much. Any parts of your lawn that have too much grass clippings would have to be raked or else, the clippings could hinder the growth of the healthy grass below. The grass usually slows much slowly in the fall so you would only have to mow your lawn about once or twice a week to keep your lawn healthy. It is important to regularly mow your grass as it protects your lawn from any kind of pest infestations or diseases.
Feeding your Lawn
Just like a child, you have to feed them nutrients so that they can grow well. It is the same for your lawn! Fertilizing your lawn will depend on the kind of soil that lies underneath the grass. However, in general, it is recommended that you should apply a liquid or granular lawn fertilizer to your lawn once every year. It is important to note that the kind of fertilizer or the nutrients it needs depends on the season or the time of the year. Usually in spring and even late summer you would have to change the level of nitrogen in the soil so that it can increase the likelihood of healthy growing grass. In fall, the soil would require higher levels of potassium to ensure that the roots are well maintained and strong enough to handle the cold winter. Some people make the mistake of over fertilizing their grass which can be counterproductive. It could even cause problems in growth and could even increase the growth of fungus.
Watering your Lawn
During dry seasons, you should pay more attention to the newly planted grass and water it weekly. You should do so until the grass are firmly established. For lawns with no newly planted grass, you do not have to water them during dry periods. Instead, stop mowing your lawn to maintain its roots.
